Keep a sofa clean

Your sofa may be upholstered in microfiber, leather or printed fabrics with the many different fabrics and styles available. There is no one fixed model that will clean all these types of fabric. Because of your sofa such important, you want it to always look its best. Using the wrong kind of cleaner can cause the fabric on your sofa to shrink, fade or become discolored. Learn the facts so you can keep your furniture looking new and sharp according to different way and different material quality.
·

Fabric sofas
Upholstered fabric sofas should be vacuumed before you proceed with cleaning them. Remove the couch cushions and thoroughly remove all dust and dirt. If you don't vacuum, you could rub the dirt into the very couch cushions you're trying to clean. Most couch fabrics, other than leather, can be cleaned with warm water and laundry detergent. Always test a spot before you use the detergent on the whole sofa. If you notice fading, discoloration or shrinkage, don't proceed. Your next option is to hire a professional or do it yourself with a steam cleaner. However, if there is no damage to your test spot, you can proceed to clean with the warm water and laundry detergent.

Leather sofas
This elegant piece of furniture requires a very specific cleaning process. Water will actually damage your leather sofa, so you'll need to invest in leather cleaners and conditioners. Before applying the solvent, you'll need to thoroughly vacuum the sofa and cushions to remove all dust and dirt. Once the dirt is removed, just follow the directions found on the leather cleaning solution to clean your leather sofa to your satisfaction. You'll need dry cloths to apply the cleaner and conditioner.

Microfiber sofas
Microfiber fabrics are made from tightly woven fibers. These fibers keep a lot of dust and allergens out of your couch cushions. The tightly woven fibers also make it difficult for liquids to seep through the fabric. Most spilled liquids will bead on the fabric, allowing you to quickly take care of spills before they stain the couch. This feature does not make your microfiber couch stain-proof, merely stain-resistant. If you do happen to get a spot or stain, read the care-instructions tag found on your sofa. It will tell you if you can use a water-based solution or if you'll need to invest in a solvent cleaner.

You may want to try carpet foam cleaner for spots that are still present after the cleaning. Again, TEST an area prior to applying. Some instructions will say dry clean only. You may want to use a steam cleaner on that couch. Again, test it first. Cotton and wool fabrics may shrink. It may be wise not to shampoo the sofa but to spot clean it.
